Great Open Ear Headphones For Misophonia

You have heard the saying, “It is so quiet you can hear a pin drop.”  When it is quiet, your ears turn up their sensitivity so sounds seem louder, are more noticeable, and the clarity/fidelity of the sound is perfect.  Simply by adding sound to your ears, you can greatly reduce the severity of your misophonic response to triggers.

An audiologist can provide a sound generator device, which is a hearing aid that produces noise.  Most hearing aids now have Bluetooth connection to your smartphone, so you can choose the noise you use with a noise app.  These devices are very small, hardly noticeable, and VERY EXPENSIVE.  The minimum cost close to $2,000.

You can get the same benefit using an open ear headphone and a noise app on your phone.  I like the noise app White Noise by TMSOFT (blue icon, $1) and White Noise Market by TMSOFT. With this app you can create your own mix of sounds that work well for blocking different types of triggers.  So for less than $10, you get the same functionality as the audiologist provided sound generators.

For incredible noise isolation, use one of these small earbuds (playing the noise app) and ear muffs over them.  This is powerful enough to block the sound of a leaf blower!
